This is the first of the chunky puzzles we bought for my daughter, and it's still her favorite. We have most of the Melissa and Doug chunky puzzles, and this seems to be one of the easiest to work for some reason. My daughter received this around her 1st birthday, and it wasn't long till she could work it alone. Even now at 18 months, she loves to play with it. Some people complained about the quality, and perhaps there are different versions out there, but we have the one shown in the picture and it is definitely painted, NOT a sticker. All the sides and back are also painted (solid colors), which make the animals fun to play with even apart from the puzzle board.
